WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Alex Kovalev and Arron Asham scored
third-period goals 18 seconds apart and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped
32 shots to lead the Penguins to a 3-0 victory over the Lightning
in the first-round playoff opener last night. Chris Kunitz sealed
the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute in the Penguins'
first postseason game in their new arena.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The 76ers missed out on their first winning
season in six years by losing 104-100 to the Pistons in the regular
season finale. Rodney Stuckey scored 29 points for Detroit. Jrue
Holiday led the Sixers with 21 points. Andres Nocioni and Evan
Turner each scored 18. The Sixers are slumping at the wrong time as
they get set to play Miami in the playoffs.

WASHINGTON (AP) - At his dominant best until a shaky ninth
inning, Roy Halladay held on to throw his first complete game of
2011, leading the Phillies past the Nationals 3-2 last night.
Through eight shutout innings, Halladay allowed only a pair of
singles. In the ninth, Halladay allowed four hits before throwing
six strikes in a row to fan pinch-hitter Matt Stairs and Ivan
Rodriguez to end the game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Pirates 6-0
last night. Pittsburgh starter Kevin Correia (2-1) took a no-hitter
into the sixth, but his outing quickly unraveled from there. The
Pirates have lost four of five at home after beginning the season
by winning consecutive road series for the first time since 2007.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers begin their defense of the
Eastern Conference title when they open the playoffs against the
Buffalo Sabres at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The
Flyers led the conference for most of the season before slipping to
second place down the stretch.

VOORHEES, N.J (AP) -Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger is a gameday
decision for Game 1 against the Buffalo Sabres. Flyers captain Mike
Richards also skipped practice the day before the postseason
opener.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State leading receiver Derek Moye
is recovering from a concussion but could play in Saturday's
Blue-White game to wrap up spring practice. Moye says he's
returning to non-contact drills, and that there was a chance he
could play in Saturday's scrimmage.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Joe Paterno, with a record 401 wins
entering his 45th year as the head coach at Penn State, stumbled
yesterday when talking about the Big Ten's expansion and
two-division format this fall. He referred to the conference as the
Big 12 before laughing and pointing out that he was at least
partially right since the Big Ten now has a dozen teams.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Penn State is a bit of an underdog
entering this weekend's NCAA men's gymnastics meet at Ohio State.
Michigan is the defending champion and Oklahoma is the team to
beat. Oklahoma comes in with the highest qualifying score.
Stanford, California, Illinois, Penn State and Michigan round out
the top six coming in.
