ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh
Pirates 7-4 yesterday. Kyle Lohse went a workmanlike five innings
for his 100th career win. Lohse gave up four runs, two of them
earned. He allowed six hits, struck out four and walked two.
Pittsburgh has lost four of its last six.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols
was held out of the starting lineup yesterday against the
Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Tony La Russa said he felt Pujols
needed a day off. The Cardinals are off today, giving Pujols a
two-day break.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin wanted his
defensive starters to get 40-50 snaps worth of work Saturday night
against Atlanta. Tomlin didn't expect his starters to get all of
that work in a single half. The Falcons threw a whopping 42 times
in the first half of Pittsburgh's 34-16 win, providing the Steelers
with plenty to work on with two weeks left before the regular
season begins.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Huntington Beach, California beat
Hamamatsu City, Japan 2-1 yesterday to take the Little League World
Series. Nick Pratto singled with two outs and the bases loaded to
lead California to victory.
