ST. LOUIS (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel
expects a loose confident team to face the St. Louis Cardinals in
Game 3 this afternoon. The best-of-five series is tied at one game
each. Lefty Cole Hamels will head to the hill for the Phils. Jaime
Garcia will make his first postseason appearance for the Cardinals.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger's status is still
uncertain. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback injured his left
foot in Sunday's 17-10 loss to Houston. Roethlisberger remained in
the game but walked out of the locker room afterward on crutches
with the foot in a protective boot.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles were a popular pick
to reach the Super Bowl after a free-agent spending spree brought
several big-name players to town. But the overhyped birds are off
to a 1-3 start. Their latest loss was their worst one yet. The
Eagles wasted a 20-point lead in a 24-23 home loss to San Francisco
on Sunday.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby will
start the season on injured reserve. The team placed the former MVP
on the injured list yesterday, meaning he'll have to miss at least
the first week of the season. Crosby is recovering from
concussion-like symptoms sustained last January. The Penguins open
the season on Thursday at Vancouver.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt running back Ray Graham says the Panthers
never gave up believing in new coach Todd Graham's system. Pitt
rolled over South Florida 44-17 last week, dominating the second
half to post its first victory over a Top 25 team in three years.
The Panthers snapped a two-game losing streak with the win and
started to play what Todd Graham is calling the latest version of
"Pitt football."
MOHNTON, Pa. (AP) - Jason Line collected his sixth win of the
season and the second in NHRA's playoffs during a rain-delayed
final round at the NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway yesterday.
Spencer Massey (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Arana Jr.
(Pro Stock Motorcycle) also collected victories at the NHRA Full
Throttle Drag Racing Series Event.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Renie Shields was promoted to associate
athletic director for varsity programs and senior women's
administrator yesterday at Saint Joseph's. She replaces Ellen Ryan,
who retired from that position after 37 years.
