ST. LOUIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Ben Francisco and closer Ryan
Madson made manager Charlie Manuel's moves look smart, and the
Philadelphia Phillies held off the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2
yesterday for a 2-1 lead in their NL playoff series. Francisco
batted for pitcher Cole Hamels and broke open a scoreless game with
a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger's left foot is good enough
to play. James Harrison's right eye is not, and he'll need surgery.
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says he expects
Roethlisberger to be under center when his struggling team faces
surging Tennessee on Sunday at Heinz Field.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno prodded reporters and
poked fun at himself. Penn State's head coach was in a good mood
for someone trying to get his team ready to face Big Ten nemesis
Iowa. The Hawkeyes are 8-1 against the Nittany Lions since 2000.
Paterno says he's focusing on the positives, like the return home
to Happy Valley.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Many of Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins
teammates spent their summer playing golf, traveling and trying to
get over the team's loss to Tampa Bay in the opening round of the
NHL playoffs. Crosby spent his summer recovering from
concussion-like symptoms that have kept him from playing since
January. Crosby is practicing with the team but still hasn't been
cleared for contact. There remains no timetable for his return.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington
Capitals are teaming up to raise money for the families of the
Russian hockey players killed in a plane crash last month. The
teams will wear commemorative patches honoring the 28 Lokomotiv
Yaroslavl players who died when their plane went down in western
Russia when the rivals meet on October 13th at the Consol Energy
Center.
