NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles acquired veteran offensive lineman Reggie Wells from the Arizona Cardinals yesterday in exchange for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick. Wells was a sixth-round pick in 2003 and has started 90 games in seven years with Arizona, including 64 in a row since 2005.

NEW YORK (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger's suspension has been cut from six games to four by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The league says the reinstatement is contingent on Roethlisberger
"avoiding any further violations of the personal conduct policy." Roethlisberger says he has learned a lot in recent months about himself.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - With Ben Roethlisberger out for four weeks, and Byron Leftwich's strained knee ligament likely to keep him out for four weeks, it's not clear who will start at quarterback for Pittsburgh in the season opener. Dennis Dixon was taken out of Thursday's preseason game after throwing a single pass -- a sign he'll get the starting nod over Charlie Batch.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Friday's Games

Philadelphia 1, Milwaukee 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels dominated over seven innings and the Philadelphia Phillies capitalized on a Milwaukee miscue to score the only run they would need in a 1-0 victory over the Brewers last night. Hamels continued to receive little run support, but didn't need much as he breezed to his second straight win and ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 18. He allowed three hits and struck out seven.

NEW YORK (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies minor league pitcher Alvaro Bacil has been suspended 50 games after a positive drug test. The right-handed Bacil was suspended yesterday after testing positive for a metabolite of Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance that violates the minor league drug program.

Pittsurgh 8, Washington 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Doumit had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs, and Garrett Jones drove in three runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-5 victory over the Washington Nationals last night. Zach Duke pitched five innings for the win, leaving after failing to retire any of the four batters he faced in the sixth inning as Washington scored four runs to close to 8-5. He allowed four runs and five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
