CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James was triumphant in his return to
Cleveland, scoring a game-high 38 points in just three quarters to
lead the Miami Heat to an easy 118-90 rout of the Cavaliers. James
was booed loudly when he ran onto the court for the first time,
when he was introduced and when he rubbed powder at the press table
before throwing the residue in the air prior to the opening tip. He
also had six more baskets and 11 more points than the Cavaliers'
entire starting lineup.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have regained sole
possession of the NFC East lead following last night's 34-24 win
over the Houston Texans. Michael Vick threw for a touchdown and ran
for another after the Eagles blew a 14-3 lead and fell behind
24-20. Vick passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns for the 8-4
Eagles.
CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago White Sox and first baseman Adam Dunn
have worked out a four-year, $56 million deal, according to a
person with knowledge of the negotiations. Dunn hit .260 with 38
homers and 103 RBIs for the Washington Nationals last season. The
White Sox also exercised a club option on shortstop Alexei Ramirez
for next season.
NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees have increased their
contract offer to Derek Jeter. The Bombers opened with a $45
million, three-year offer last month, then awaited a formal
proposal from its captain. It was not known whether the new offer
improved the value, contract length or both.
ZURICH (AP) - Soccer's World Cup won't be coming to the United
States anytime soon after the country lost out in the bidding for
the 2022 tournament. Qatar (GUH'-tur) received the right to host
the 2022 event by receiving 14 votes compared to eight for the U.S.
in the final balloting. The latest sports setback for America comes
after lost bids for the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.
