WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Friday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Cam Newton threw his first touchdown pass
as a pro during the Carolina Panthers' 33-17 loss to the Pittsburgh
Steelers last night in their preseason finale. The Heisman Trophy
winner and Number 1 draft pick out of Auburn played only the first
series. Charlie Batch started for Pittsburgh and was 6 of 8 for 59
yards and led a touchdown drive while playing roughly one quarter.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Vince Young led the Philadelphia
Eagles on two scoring drives before leaving with a hamstring injury
in a 24-14 victory over the New York Jets last night. Young started
for Michael Vick as both teams rested almost all of their starters
in the preseason finale. Jets rookie Greg McElroy started for Mark
Sanchez. He left after injuring his right thumb in the second
quarter.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies completed an
historic four-game sweep in Cincinnati with a 6-4 win yesterday.
Ryan Howard hit his 30th homer and Vance Worley pitched into the
seventh inning.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The surging Los Angeles Dodgers survived a
shaky ninth inning to beat the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4
yesterday. Dana Eveland pitched eight crisp innings to help with
the win. Eveland gave up one run and six hits in his first major
league game since he pitched 2 2-3 innings for Pittsburgh at Texas
on June 23rd, 2010.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled catcher
Jason Jaramillo and purchased the contract of left-hander Brian
Burres from Triple-A Indianapolis. Manager Clint Hurdle says Burres
is likely to start today at Chicago against the Cubs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bernard Pierce made Temple coach Steve
Addazio a winner in his debut, rushing for 147 yards and three
touchdowns in the Owls' 42-7 win over Villanova last night. The
Owls won the Mayor's Cup in front of 32,638 fans at Lincoln
Financial Field.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The focus will be on the Nittany
Lion's offensive line when Penn State squares off against Indiana
State tomorrow. Three starters return from last year's front five
which effectively protected the quarterback but struggled at times
in the run game. Coach Joe Paterno says he's fine with his
projected starting five, though he remains concerned about
developing competent backups.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Stephen Strasburg allowed one hit over
six shutout innings last night for Double-A Harrisburg in what was
expected to be his final minor league rehab start before he returns
to the Washington Nationals. Featuring a fastball that hit 99 mph,
the Number 1 pick from the 2009 draft left with Harrisburg leading
Portland 9-0. He struck out four and threw 70 pitches, 53 for
strikes.
