WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

HOUSTON (AP) - Clint Barmes hit a three-run homer and J.A. Happ
pitched six solid innings against his former team as the Houston
Astros beat Philadelphia 5-2 last night, preventing the Phillies
from wrapping up a playoff spot. The Phillies needed a win over
Houston or a loss by St. Louis to clinch at least a wild-card
berth.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nick Punto hit a go-ahead double in the ninth
inning and the surging St. Louis Cardinals overcame three errors by
first baseman Albert Pujols to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 last
night. Trying to stay in the wild card and NL Central races, the
Cardinals won for the sixth time in seven games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers have placed starting right tackle
Willie Colon on the injured reserve list and signed well-traveled
veteran Jamon Meredith. Colon underwent surgery early yesterday to
repair a torn triceps muscle sustained in a season-opening loss to
Baltimore.

UNDATED (AP) - Filling those Big Ten schedules is a balancing
act. Players and fans look forward to big early-season games like
Ohio State's trip to Miami this weekend. Southeast Missouri State's
visit to Purdue doesn't have the same mark of distinction. Coaches
and administrators say it's complicated. Smaller schools rely
heavily on payouts from big-time teams to balance their athletic
department budgets.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A federal appeals court says in a 2-1
decision that nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis should be
back on the ballot for a seat in the New Jersey state senate. The
ruling yesterday could be the final word on a candidacy marked by
legal questions about whether Lewis meets the state's residency
requirement.
