ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Eagles opened up their season with a 31-13
win over the Rams in St. Louis yesterday, LeSean McCoy scored twice
while Michael Vick rushed for 98 yards and DeSean Jackson had more
than 100 yards receiving in the win.
BALTIMORE (AP) - The Steelers were flat for their opener Sunday,
losing to the Ravens in Baltimore 35-7. The Ravens took a 14-0 lead
in the first quarter and never let up against the Steelers. The
loss ended Pittsburgh's eight-game winning streak in season
openers.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Phillies missed out on a chance to clinch a
playoff spot as they lost yesterday to the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2.
Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo struck out 12 Phillies to move to
16-10. Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard homered in the loss for the
Phillies.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Javier Vazquez threw six scoreless innings as
the Marlins finished off a sweep of the Pirates at PNC Park
yesterday, 4-1. The Pirates finished the season series 0-6 against
Florida, with the Marlins now winning 14 of their last 16 against
Pittsburgh overall.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have given GM Neal Huntington a
three-year contract extension, with the Pirates showing improvement
through much of the season. The deal extends Huntington through the
2014 season, with a team option for 2015. The Pirates had the lead
in the NL Central in late July, although a 10-game losing skid then
dashed any postseason hopes. They 66-80, two losses short of
ensuring another sub-.500 season.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's stay in the college
football rankings was a short one. The Nittany Lions dropped out of
the AP Top 25 after Saturday's loss to Alabama. The Crimson Tide is
now ranked second, behind Oklahoma and ahead of LSU.
