MONTREAL (AP) — Andrei Meszaros scored 8:08 into the third, Mathieu Carle had three assists and the Philadelphia Flyers extended their winning streak to seven with a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens last night. Maxime Talbot, Harry Zolnierczyk and Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Flyers in the victory tempered by news that captain Chris Pronger will miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs because of severe post-concussion syndrome.

CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) — An attorney for former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky says his recent comments about some children needing instruction on how to shower did not apply to his client's conduct. Carlisle attorney Karl Rominger said during an interview with WHTM-TV earlier this week that troubled youths sometimes have to be taught basic life skills "like how to put soap on their body."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Today's court hearing in Harrisburg for two Penn State officials will focus on exactly what they were told about child sex-abuse allegations in 2002. Former Vice President Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley are charged with lying to a grand jury and failing to report sex-abuse allegations to police.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State has asked for more time to respond to an NCAA inquiry over the university's handling of child sex abuse accusations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. Penn State said in a letter to the NCAA that answers to questions about the Sandusky case might come from other, separate investigations already in progress.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says his sprained left ankle feels better but he's still not sure when he will return to practice. Roethlisberger hopes he sees enough improvement over the next day or so to practice sometime before the Steelers play at San Francisco on Monday night.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Plaxico Burress credits Michael Vick for paving the way for his NFL comeback. The New York Jets wide receiver says if Vick hadn't been able to return to the league and be successful after serving prison time, he's not sure he would have been able to do the same.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have signed lefty Dontrelle Willis to a one-year contract, worth $850,000. The 30-year-old Willis was the 2003 NL Rookie of the Year with Florida and finished second in Cy Young Award voting in 2005. He was 1-6 with a 5.00 ERA for Cincinnati last year.
