PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies general manager Rueben Amaro Jr.
says rookie pitching sensation J.A. (JAY) Happ will stay in the
rotation when Pedro Martinez is recalled from his rehabilitation
assignment. The left-handed Happ is 8-2 with a 2.74 ERA and two
shutouts in 26 games this season.
NEW YORK (AP) - The Yankees have picked up pitcher Chad Gaudin
from the San Diego Padres for a player to be named and could use
him in long relief or as the No. 5 starter. The 26-year-old
right-hander is 4-10 with a 5.13 ERA in 20 games for the Padres,
including 19 starts.
AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Padraig Harrington shot a 6-under 64 to take
a two-shot lead after the first round of the Bridgestone
Invitational. Tiger Woods opened with a 68, while Phil Mickelson
shot a 70 in his first tournament in six weeks.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Packers coach Mike McCarthy says tight
end Tory Humphrey will undergo surgery today for a broken forearm
but doesn't know how long he'll be sidelined. Humphrey suffered the
injury yesterday when he collided with safety Aaron Rouse.
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) - Jessica Hardy broke the world record
in the 50-meter breaststroke a day after returning to competition
following a one-year ban for a failed drug test. Hardy set the new
mark with a split time of 29.95 seconds during the 100-meter
breaststroke at the U.S. Open National Championships.
