BIG DIAMOND REPORT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ricky Nolasco pitched seven sharp innings, Nick Johnson and Cody Ross hit solo homers as the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Friday night. Nolasco allowed two runs and four hits, striking out seven, and has been outstanding since returning from a brief stint in the minors.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Ludwick's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning scored the go-ahead run and the St. Louis Cardinals withstood a shaky beginning by Chris Carpenter to beat Pittsburgh 6-4 on Friday night. The Pirates' loss stretched their losing
streak to six games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Cardinals-Pirates game was stopped for about 10 minutes in the seventh inning Friday night when a fan tumbled onto the field and cut his forehead while trying to catch a foul ground ball. The fan landed face-first onto the mostly clay track that rings the field. The fan was taken off the field on a stretcher before play resumed.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have put left-handed reliever Donnie Veal on the disabled list with a sprained left index finger and purchased the contract of right-hander Chris Bootcheck from Triple-A Indianapolis. Bootcheck was 3-2 with 20
saves at Triple-A. He was 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA in 10 games with the Angels last season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - While the Pirates have signed all four of the players they chose during the first three rounds of June's draft, they still have their eye on signing some later round picks - including three highly touted prep pitchers. The team says lefty Zackry Dodson, Zachary Von Rosenberg and Colton Cain are still negotiating with the Pirates.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - The lawyer for a woman suing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for alleged sexual assault has given the two-time Super Bowl winner more time to respond to the lawsuit. Reno attorney Cal Dunlap says Roethlisberger's attorneys now have until August 21 to file their response.

COLE HARBOUR, Nova Scotia (AP) - Sidney Crosby brought quite the present to his hometown during a celebration of his 22nd birthday. The Penguins captain arrived in Halifax on Friday carrying the Stanley Cup. Crosby then took the NHL's championship trophy on a tour of Cole Harbour, the suburban community where he was raised.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - The Hall of Fame weekend in Canton, Ohio, is shaping up as a Buffalo bash. Bills owner Ralph Wilson has invited nearly everybody who's ever worked for him and former defensive end Bruce Smith has about 450 people on his guest list. Former Steelers defensive back Rod Woodson is also among the inductees.
