LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies Web site is
reporting that it appears Cole Hamels will start Game 1 of the
National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers
tomorrow night. No official announcement has been made yet by
manager Charlie Manuel about his rotation. Hamels won in both his
starts against the Dodgers in last year's NLCS.
NEW YORK (AP) - The kickoff times of the Giants-Eagles and
Vikings-Packers games Nov. 1 have been flipped because of the
possibility of a World Series game and football action in
Philadelphia on that same night.Giants-Eagles will now start at 1
p.m. EST, with Minnesota-Green Bay at 4:15 p.m. The NFL says it
wants to ease the burden on law enforcement employees.
NEW YORK (AP) - Elton Brand scored 20 points in his best game of
the preseason and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the New York Knicks
93-85 last night for their first 4-0 exhibition start since 1978.
Brand shot 8 of 12 from the field and scored 10 points in the third
quarter, when the 76ers rebounded from an ugly second period to
take the lead for good.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith
has a right shoulder injury that coach Mike Tomlin says
"potentially could be significant." Smith was injured Sunday in
Detroit. He was being evaluated yesterday and the Steelers are not
yet certain how long he will be out.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Center fielder Andrew McCutchen is the winner
of the Roberto Clemente Award, which is presented annually to the
top Pittsburgh Pirates player of that season. McCutchen received
seven of a possible nine first-place votes in balloting by members
of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
