WPPA/T102 Sports-Wednesday October 7 2009

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Twins are the AL Central champions for the fifth time in eight years after a 6-5, 12-inning win over the Detroit Tigers in a one-game playoff. Alexi Casilla ended the game and the division title race with an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th. Brandon Inge laced a run-scoring double to put the Tigers up 5-4 in the 10th, but the Twins tied it
on Matt Tolbert's RBI single.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee will start Game 1 of the NL division series for the Philadelphia Phillies against the Colorado Rockies this afternoon. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner got the nod over Cole Hamels, who was MVP of the World Series and NLCS last year. Lee was 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts after the Phillies acquired him July 29.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The mayors of Philadelphia and Denver say agencies that help the homeless will benefit from their friendly wager over the first-round playoff series between the Colorado Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies. If the Rockies win, Denver's Road Home would receive $1,000 from Comcast Corp. and money from various banks for homeless families. If the Phillies win, Project H.O.M.E. would receive $2,000.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever J.C. Romero will have surgery today to repair the flexor tendon in his left forearm. Romero is expected to need five to six months to recover.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Danny Briere pounced on a loose puck and knocked in the rebound at 3:52 of overtime to keep the Philadelphia Flyers perfect and lift them to a 6-5 win over the Washington Capitals last night. Mike Richards bested Alex Ovechkin with his second career hat trick to help the Flyers improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

LONDON, Ontario (AP) - In NBA preseason action, Louis Williams scored 17 points, Andre Iguodala added 15 points and eight assists and the Philadelphia 76ers held on for a 107-98 victory over the Toronto Raptors last night. Samuel Dalembert added 10 points and six rebounds for the 76ers, whose 23-point lead was cut to five in the fourth quarter.
