PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee dominated the Colorado Rockies,
tossing a six-hitter and the Philadelphia Phillies began their
World Series title defense with a 5-1 victory in their playoff
opener yesterday.Raul Ibanez had two hits and two RBIs and Ryan
Howard and Jayson Werth drove in runs with key extra-base hits off
15-game winner Ubaldo Jimenez. The second game of the N.L.D.S. is
at 2:37 this afternoon.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Florida girl who grabbed a historic 200th
home run ball hit by Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard has
her prize back after suing the team for its return. After
12-year-old Jennifer Valdivia scooped up the ball, she was escorted
to the Phillies clubhouse, then exchanged it for an autographed
ball. The girl's mother filed a lawsuit Monday seeking the home run
ball's return. Now the girl has the ball back.
TORONTO (AP) - In NBA preseason action, Thaddeus Young had 11
points, Elton Brand and Samuel Dalembert each scored 10, and the
Philadelphia 76ers used a near-perfect performance from the free
throw line to beat the Toronto Raptors 84-79 last night. Marco
Belinelli and Sonny Weems both scored 12 points for the Raptors,
who played without All-Star Chris Bosh and offseason addition Hedo
Turkoglu.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Petr Prucha was knocked off his skates but
still pushed the puck into the net while sitting on a Penguins
player's back in the second period and the Phoenix Coyotes took
advantage of nine power plays to beat Pittsburgh 3-0 last night.
The Penguins played a flat, error-filled and uninspired game before
leaving on a difficult five-game road trip that begins tonight in
Philadelphia.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was back
at practice and says he'll be in the starting lineup when
Philadelphia plays Tampa Bay on Sunday.McNabb has been out since
breaking his rib in the season opener. He missed two games before
the Eagles had their bye this past weekend. He expects to wear a
protective jacket against the Buccaneers.
