PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rajon Rando had 16 points and 11 assists and Kevin Garnett added 22 points as the Boston Celtics handed the Philadelphia 76ers their fifth straight loss, 96-86 on Friday night. Lou Williams led the Sixers with 22 points, and Elton Brand had 17.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Tim Connolly scored at 2:31 of overtime, Adam Mair had a goal and assist, and Ryan Miller made 27 saves to help the Buffalo Sabres beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Friday night. The Sabres' win moves the team a point in front of idle Ottawa for first place in the Northeast Division.
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) - Lyle Overbay hit a three-run double and Jose Bautista a two-run double during an eight-run fourth inning as the Toronto Blues Jays coasted to a 14-9 victory Friday over the Philadelphia Phillies. Bautista hit the second pitch from Phillies starter Cole Hamels for a home run to center field, then added a pair of doubles in his big afternoon.
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - Zach Duke made his first start of spring training, pitching two innings to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Friday night. An All-Star last season, Duke is likely to start for the Pirates on opening day. Pittsburgh rallied for its first win of the spring.
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in Georgia say Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is being investigated in an allegation of sexual assault. Police say the incident occurred early Friday in a nightclub in Milledgeville, about 85 miles southeast of Atlanta. The player owns a home nearby.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have released linebacker Will Witherspoon. The 29-year-old Witherspoon was acquired from St. Louis in a trade last October. He was scheduled to earn $5 million this season. Witherspoon played 12 games for the Eagles, recording 56 tackles, one sack, one interception and one forced fumble.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a three-year contract with All-Pro fullback Leonard Weaver. It reportedly is worth $11 million, including $6.5 million guaranteed. Weaver had a career-high 323 yards rushing, 140 yards receiving and four touchdowns in his first season with the Eagles.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Melquan Bolding scored 31 points as Duquesne rallied from a second-half deficit to beat Fordham 111-100 on Friday, making the Rams the first Atlantic 10 team in 17 years to lose every conference game. Brenton Butler scored 29 points, Chris Gaston had 21 and Alberto Estwick added 20. Fordham lost its 21st in a row overall and finished 0-16 in the Atlantic 10.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Denzel Bowles scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half and 11th-seeded James Madison upset Drexel 77-65 on Friday night in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. The Dukes will play third-seeded William & Mary in Saturday's quarterfinals.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - In the women's Big East tournament, Monique Reid tied a career high with 32 points to lead Louisville to a 79-71 win over Pittsburgh in the first round. Meanwhile, Sarina Simmons scored 13 points as Marquette held off Villanova 53-49.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The Maxwell Football Club will name an award after Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. It will go to a college football coach. Specific guidelines are still in the works, but a statement from Penn State athletics says criteria will include the impact the coach has had on his university, players, community and state.
