MONTREAL (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers have extended their
winning streak to four with a 5-3 victory over the Canadiens on
Wednesday night. James van Riemsdyk scored twice for the Flyers.
Claude Giroux, Jeff Carter and Nikolay Zherdev also scored for the
Flyers, who lead the NHL with 47 points.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Rangers rallied for a 4-1 victory over the
Pittsburgh Penguins last night. Sidney Crosby extended his point
streak to a career-high 20 games when he assisted on Evgeni
Malkin's first-period goal for Pittsburgh, but the Penguins lost
for the second straight night after winning 12 in a row.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jrue Holiday scored 24 points and Andre
Iguodala had eight of his 20 points in Philadelphia's dominating
third quarter to lead the surging 76ers to a 105-91 victory over
the road-weary Clippers last night. Spencer Hawes had 16 points and
12 rebounds, and Elton Brand contributed 15 points for the Sixers,
who have won three straight and seven of nine.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt is expected to introduce Miami of Ohio
football coach Michael Haywood as Dave Wannstedt's successor at a
news conference today. Haywood is the only known candidate for the
job Formerly the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, Haywood was
1-11 in his first season at Miami in 2009 before going 9-4 this
season and beating Northern Illinois in the MAC championship game.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said it's
better than not being on any list at all. Ward and Steelers
linebacker James Harrison are among the 50 dirtiest players in
sports history, according to a list compiled by the website
Complex.com. Ward is 28th and Harrison is 31st.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace believes
he's quickly becoming one of the NFL's best. To prove that, he
knows there's one test he still must pass. That's prove he can be
successful going against Darrelle Revis, the Jets cornerback who is
widely considered to be the NFL's best. Wallace says he's confident
he matches up well against Revis.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson did not
practice yesterday because of the sprained left foot he sustained
in Sunday's 30-27 victory over Dallas. Coach Andy Reid said Jackson
is "day to day." Jackson caught four passes for a career-high 210
yards against Dallas, and was named NFC Offensive Player of the
Week.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles rookie Jamar Chaney will literally be
thrust into the middle of the rivalry with the New York Giants on
Sunday, when he makes his first career start at middle linebacker.
Chaney, a seventh-round pick last April out of Mississippi State,
replaced Stewart Bradley early in the second quarter of a 30-27
victory over Dallas last Sunday.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee and the Phillies have finalized a
$120 million, five-year contract that brings the star pitcher back
to Philadelphia. Lee spurned more lucrative offers from the Yankees
and Rangers to return to the Phillies, who traded him away a year
ago after he helped them reach the 2009 World Series.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have signed left-hander Donnie
Veal to a minor-league contract and have invited him to their major
league spring training camp. Veal, who had Tommy John elbow
ligament surgery in June, was not tendered a contract after the
season ended.
