WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Tuesday

NEW YORK (AP) - Cliff Lee is returning to Philadelphia a year
after the Phillies traded him away. The free-agent pitcher passed
up an extra $50 million from the New York Yankees and reached a
preliminary agreement on a $100 million, five-year contract with
the Phillies last night. The move gives the Phils the most feared
pitching rotation in baseball.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - One team has won 12 straight games to take
first place in the Atlantic Division. The other has gone 6-1-3 in
its last ten games to take second place. Indeed, it's a good time
to be a hockey fan in Pennsylvania. But something has to give
tonight, when the Penguins meet the Flyers in an early season
matchup of two of the league's marquee teams.

TORONTO (AP) - The NHL has suspended Philadelphia forward Jody
Shelley two games for hitting Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid from
behind. The players were chasing the puck during the second period
of Saturday's game when Shelley's two-handed shove knocked McQuaid
off his skates.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles rookie defensive end Brandon Graham
will miss the rest of the season after tearing a knee ligament.
Graham tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday night's 30-27
win at Dallas. The Eagles also lost middle linebacker Stewart
Bradley indefinitely. Bradley dislocated his right elbow, but coach
Andy Reid says he doesn't need surgery at this time.

NEW YORK (AP) - Vikings-Eagles will replace Chargers-Bengals as
the Sunday night game December 26th under the NFL's flexible
scheduling policy. The league said Monday the San Diego-Cincinnati
matchup would move to 4:05 p.m. EST on CBS. The shift in Week 16 is
the first time this season the NFL has changed the Sunday night
game.

NEW YORK (AP) - A pitcher in the Pittsburgh Pirates'
organization has been suspended 50 games under the minor league
drug program. Arquimedes Lorenzo was a member of Pittsburgh's team
in the Dominican Summer League. The commissioner's office imposed
the penalty Monday and said it will start when next season begins.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Former Temple coach Al Golden has
arrived in Miami to begin work leading the Hurricanes back to
national prominence. Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt says
Golden was the top choice as soon as their first interview in New
York ended early last week.

CHENEY, Wash. (AP) - Eastern Washington running back Taiwan
Jones has a fractured bone in his foot and is not expected to play
Friday against Villanova in the Football Championship Subdivision
semifinals. Jones fractured his left foot on Saturday in the
overtime victory over North Dakota State. He still finished with a
career-high 230 yards.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - It'll be the Leaders vs. the Legends
divisions when the Big Ten stages its first football championship
game next season. The conference also on Monday unveiled a new logo
- it is a block "Big Ten" with the numeral 10 embedded in the
word last two letters of Big - as well as two-person trophy names
for 18 new football awards, including the Stagg-Paterno
Championship Trophy.
