WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andrej Meszaros scored 1:07 into overtime to
bail out the Flyers after they blew a third period lead and give
Philadelphia a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday
night. The Flyers won only hours after they gave general manager
Paul Holmgren a three-year contract extension.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Sidney Crosby-less Penguins beat the
injury-thinned Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Tuesday night. Pittsburgh
had been without a penalty shot goal since Jarkko Ruutu scored
against Toronto on Jan. 20, 2007. Conner converted at 11:29 of the
first, making it 2-0. Penguins All-Star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury
preserved the lead by making 36 saves.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins center Mark Letestu has
signed a $1.25 million, two-year contract extension that runs
through the 2012-13 season. The deal was announced following the
Penguins' 4-1 victory over the Red Wings on Tuesday night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is feeling
better despite a concussion that has sidelined him for six games,
but doesn't know when he can resume practicing or playing. Crosby's
status for the All-Star game January 30 in Raleigh, N.C., is
uncertain, although he said Tuesday there is a "slight chance" he
could be back for it.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - The New York Jets are done with the
New England Patriots. Bring on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Don't
expect a bunch of expletives and trash talk to overshadow the AFC
championship game between the Jets and Steelers. This time, it's
not personal for coach Rex Ryan. Not against Steelers coach Mike
Tomlin.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Right-handed reliever Joel Hanrahan has agreed
to terms on a $1.4 million, one-year contract with the Pittsburgh
Pirates. The sides avoided arbitration with Tuesday's deal.
Hanrahan and right-hander Evan Meek are expected to compete to be
the closer.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have avoided
arbitration with right-handed pitcher Kyle Kendrick, agreeing to a
$2.45 million, one-year contract. The Phillies announced the deal
on Tuesday. Kendrick's contract includes awards bonuses.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tight ends coach Tony Dews is the third former
Michigan assistant coach to join new Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham's
staff. Previously, assistant head coach Calvin Magee, also the
co-offensive coordinator, and cornerbacks coach Tony Gibson were
added from former Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez's staff. Gibson
will also be the recruiting coordinator.
