NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Hornets held on for their
third straight victory, 84-77 over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday
night. Brand led Philadelphia with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while
Andres Nocioni had 13 points and Jrue Holiday and Marreese Speights
each had 12 points.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Hofstra beat Drexel 75-69 Monday night.
Samme Givens had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead the Dragons,
who had won seven of their previous eight games. Hofstra took the
lead on two free throws by Shemiye McLendon.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky shot its way past Penn 86-62 on
Monday night. Josh Harrellson added 12 points and 11 rebounds and
Darius Miller had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the
Wildcats used some scorching second-half shooting to subdue the
Quakers. Penn led by as much as 12 early but had no answer when the
Wildcats awoke following a sleepy opening 15 minutes.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Winter Classic's television ratings were up
from last year even though it was postponed because of rain. The
Washington Capitals' 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins outdoors
on New Year's Day earned a 2.3 rating and 4 share on NBC. That's a
10 percent increase from last year's overtime game between the
Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman
Deryk Engelland to a $1.7 million, three-year contract that runs
through the 2013-14 season. The deal will count $566,700 per season
against the NHL salary cap.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers waived goaltender
Michael Leighton on Monday, general manager Paul Holmgren
announced. Leighton, who helped lead Philadelphia to the Stanley
Cup Finals last June, underwent offseason knee surgery and had only
played in one game this season, a 7-4 win over the Kings in Los
Angeles last week.
