PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Goaltender Michael Leighton cleared waivers
on Tuesday, and was sent to the Philadelphia Flyers' AHL affiliate.
The Flyers, tied for first place in the Atlantic Division with
Pittsburgh, will take on the New Jersey Devils in Newark on
Thursday.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - After three months of hype and buildup for the
Winter Classic, the Pittsburgh Penguins are focusing again on
playing games that count just as much as the outdoor game 3-1 loss
to the Capitals. Even if those games will lack the drama and the
distractions that accompanied playing in what was the NHL's
most-watched regular-season game in 35 years.
NEW YORK (AP) - Sidney Crosby is the top vote-getter for the NHL
All-Star Game. The NHL also announced Tuesday leading vote-getters
Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh
Penguins and Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith of the Chicago
Blackhawks. The rest of the 42 All-Stars will be revealed on
January 11.
CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians have acquired reliever
Joe Martinez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations.
The 27-year-old right-hander split time last season between
Triple-A and the majors for both Pittsburgh and San Francisco. He
went a combined 0-1 with a 4.12 ERA in nine games.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's season is about to get
much more difficult. Over the next two weeks, the Nittany Lions
must play five games against Big Ten foes all ranked in the Top 25.
The stretch begins Wednesday when No. 11 Purdue (13-1, 2-0) visits
Happy Valley. The five-game run could go a long way toward helping
- or hurting - the school's postseason resume.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden's
father says coach Joe Paterno has denied his son's request to
transfer. Robert Bolden, Sr., said he wasn't expecting Paterno to
turn down the quarterback after a meeting Tuesday in State College.
It's unclear what Bolden will do next, with spring semester classes
starting Monday.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gary McGhee scored all of his 13 points
in the second half, grabbing a key rebound and making two free
throws with 18 seconds left to help No. 5 Pittsburgh hold off
feisty Providence 83-79 on Tuesday night. It was Pitt's first trip
to Providence since losing here as the No. 1 team in the country in
2009.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Michael Ojo scored a career-high 33 points
to lead Lehigh over New Jersey Institute of Technology 92-83 on
Tuesday night. Ojo, who also reached 500-career points, scored 14
in the first eight minutes and 20 in the first half as the Mountain
Hawks (9-6) led 43-33 at halftime.
