WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Grizzlies got a big second half from
Mike Conley to beat the Philadelphia 76ers last night in Memphis,
102-91. Conley scored all 22 of his points after the intermission.
Thaddeus Young led the 76ers with 23 points, while Lou Williams
added 18 off the bench and Elton Brand scored 13.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The Flyers' Kimmo Timonen scored in the
seventh round of a shootout last night as Philadelphia beat the
Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3. The Eastern Conference-leading Flyers
improved to 18-6-3 on the road this season. Tampa Bay now trails
the Flyers by five points in the East.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Freshman James Bell more than doubled his
career high with 21 points and 15th-ranked Villanova ended a
two-game losing skid with a 60-57 win over Seton Hall last night.
Bell was the offensive star for the Wildcats, who committed 22
turnovers -- double their season average. Corey Stokes missed a
second straight game with a turf toe injury.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - While the focus has been the Phillies
starting rotation as spring training gets under way in Florida, the
Phillies also are entering the new season having to fill the hole
left when Jayson Werth left via free agency. He went to Washington
for a seven-year, $126 million contract. Rookie Domonic Brown is
considered the longterm answer for the spot but analysts suggest he
could platoon with Ben Francisco.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have put the franchise tag on
quarterback Michael Vick, although it remains to be seen what that
will mean with the current collective bargaining agreement set to
run out next month. The Eagles also put the transitional tag on
kicker David Akers, with coach Andy Reid saying both were two of
the team's most valuable players last year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Innovative is how a lot of people describe
first-year Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham, but Graham says he just as
much old-school. He's working to modernize the program -- for
instance making sure coaches are seen with iPads when they go into
homes on recruiting visits. He's also a disciplinarian -- insisting
on tucked-in shirts and 6 a-m "tour of duty" team workouts.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - As St. Joseph's takes on 24th-ranked Xavier
tonight, coach Phil Martelli will take the court with perhaps the
most inspirational walk-on of his career. Lenny Martelli Jr. -- no
relation to the Hawks coach -- was left paralyzed by a snowboarding
accident nearly a year ago. The teenager has survived surgery and
rehab and has started walking again with the aide of canes.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State has gotten a pledge of $1
million from a State college couple as it upgrades its hockey
program to Division I next year. The university says it will name
the main lobby of the school's new hockey arena after the Paul and
Nancy Silvis family. The couple is also leading a campaign to raise
another $10 million.
