PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phoenix's Shane Doan scored an overtime
power-play goal and the Coyotes beat the Flyers in Philadelphia 3-2
last night. Doan put a shot past Sergei Bobrovsky at 2:41 of the
overtime forced when Claude Giroux tied the game with just over a
minute left in regulation. Despite the loss, the Flyers still lead
Tampa Bay by eight points in the East.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins' two newest additions
have been grounded by a snowstorm. James Neal and Matt Niskanen
missed yesterday's practice, a day after they were dealt to the
Pens by Dallas. Their flight to Pittsburgh was diverted to New
Jersey. Coach Dan Bylsma says both should still make their debuts
tonight against San Jose.
CINCINNATI (AP) - Jeff Robinson scored a career-high 22 points
as 25th-ranked Xavier rolled past La Salle last night, 100-62. Tu
Holloway finished one rebound short of a third career
triple-double. Tyreek Duren scored 18 points to lead the Explorers,
who have lost three straight to fall to 12-16.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State guard Talor Battle is
approaching another milestone in his college career -- needing just
three assists to become the first Big Ten player to have 2,000
points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists for his career. Penn State
faces Northwestern tomorrow night with a victory crucial if the
Nittany Lions have any hope of making the NCAA tournament.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - After a 16-1 start to the season, Villanova
has gone 5-6 in a repeat of last season's late swoon in the Big
East. The Wildcats face the possibility they could drop their last
three games -- all against ranked opponents. The first of the
three, 23rd ranked St. John's comes on Saturday.
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - The Philadelphia Union has signed Guatemalan
forward Carlos Ruiz on a free transfer from the Greek club Aris.
Ruiz scored a league-leading 24 goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy in
2002, but over the last two-plus years has played with clubs in
Paraguay and Mexico. He scored three goals this season in the
Europa League.
