WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

BOSTON (AP) - For the second straight season, the Flyers have
found themselves in an 0-3 deficit to the Boston Bruins in the
Eastern Conference semifinals. Zdeno Chara and David Krejci scored
in the opening 63 seconds to set the pace for Boston in a 5-1 win
over Philadelphia last night. Last year the Flyers were able to win
four straight to take the series in seven games.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ryan Doumit's grand slam highlighted a six-run
third inning and Kevin Correia beat his old team yesterday when the
Pirates won 7-4 to take two of three from the Padres. The Pirates
are playing well away from Pittsburgh. They've won five road series
already, one more than they did all of last year.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies beat the Nationals 7-4 last
night. Vance Worley threw six sharp innings and Raul Ibanez homered
and had three hits. Ibanez snapped an 0-for-35 slump with a pair of
doubles on Tuesday, and is now 5 for 7 since the skid. The NL
East-leading Phillies have won 10 of 13.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have activated left-hander J.C.
Romero from the disabled list and optioned right-hander David
Herndon to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Romero was originally placed on
the DL on April 19 with a right calf strain. He has a 3.86 ERA in
seven appearances this season. Herndon had a 9.28 ERA in 11 games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall has
written a "clarification" of his comments made Monday on Twitter
regarding the death of Osama bin Laden. In an in-depth blog post,
Mendenhall writes that he does not support bin Laden, and that he
aimed to clear things up, for not only himself, but also the
Steelers.

AIGLE, Switzerland (AP) - The International Cycling Union and
its current and former president have started legal action against
disgraced rider Floyd Landis over his allegations of doping in the
sport. The UCI says it has "lodged a case" in Swiss courts over
the Lancaster County native's "repeated, serious attacks" against
its president Pat McQuaid and predecessor Hein Verbruggen.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State and Ohio State are taking
their Big Ten grudge match to the volleyball court. The border
rivals meet tonight in State College in an NCAA men's volleyball
championship semifinal. The other semifinal pits preseason favorite
and top seed Southern California against upstart UC-Santa Barbara.
The winners meet Saturday night.

RADNOR, Pa. (AP) - Police say Charlotte Bobcats forward Dante
Cunningham faces a drug-possession charge after police found a
small amount of marijuana in his pickup during a traffic stop in
suburban Philadelphia. Radnor Township Police say officers
responding to a reckless driving complaint on Friday stopped the
former Villanova star. Colarulo says officers smelled marijuana and
recovered a suspicious substance after Cunningham consented to a
search.
