PHILADELPHIA (AP) - It comes down to Game 5 tonight for the
Phillies as they host the Cardinals in the deciding game of their
playoff series. Roy Halladay gets the ball for the Phillies against
the Cardinals' ace, Chris Carpenter. The two both made their
initial mark in the majors with Toronto but tonight's matchup will
mark the first time they've faced each other on the mound.
BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins raised their Stanley Cup banner
last night but the Flyers got the win in the regular season opener
for both teams, 2-1. Jaromir Jagr (YAHR'-oh-meer YAH'-gur) scored
his 1,600th career NHL point in the win, while Ilya Bryzgalov
(IHL'-yuh brihs-GAH'-lahf) made 22 saves.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang
scored in the shootout to push the Penguins past the Canucks in
Vancouver last night, 4-3. Matt Cooke also scored once on a power
play and once short-handed while Marc-Andre Fleury (marhk-ahn-dray
FLOOR'-ee) had 33 saves in the season-opening win.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - With James Harrison out for several weeks with
a broken bone around his left eye, the Steelers' Lawrence Timmons
will be taking his spot in the lineup at right outside linebacker.
The Steelers, who face Tennessee Sunday, say there isn't all that
much of a transition that Timmons will have to make. He moved from
the outside to inside linebacker when he began his NFL career.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo
is staying cool even though his unit has blown three consecutive
fourth-quarter leads. Castillo says that while there are some
things the team and him need to take care of, he's confident the
Eagles will "get this thing turned around." The Eagles play
Buffalo this Sunday.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Mercyhurst and Robert Morris are both in
Nebraska for the weekend. Mercyhurst this evening takes on host
Nebraska-Omaha in the Mutual of Omaha Stampede. Mercyhurst is 0-2-0
against Nebraska-Omaha. Robert Morris will take on Colgate in the
tournament's other opening-day game.
