PITTSBURGH (AP) — Evgeni Malkin's shootout goal capped a rally from a two-goal deficit in the third period and the Pittsburgh Penguins extended their winning streak to five with a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders last night. New York has lost four in a row overall and hasn't won in Pittsburgh in almost four years.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Andrew Ladd scored the game-winner with 1:06 remaining on a one-timer from close range to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a wild 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers last night. Fifteen players scored in the wide-open game in which both clubs set season highs for goals scored and goals allowed.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley is emerging as the team's new leader. He's playing the best football of his career. Woodley leads the AFC with seven sacks heading into Sunday's much anticipated showdown with New England.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots defense is preparing for a tough test against the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend. Although New England is still the lowest-rated team in total defense, the Patriots have had solid defensive games in back-to-back wins over the Jets and Cowboys. Next up are the Steelers on Sunday in Pittsburgh.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Arguably, no NHL franchise has been more positively impacted by the draft than the Pittsburgh Penguins. Now, word has come that for the second time, the team will host it. Less than 10 months after the city served as the site of the annual Winter Classic outdoor game, commissioner Gary Bettman was in Pittsburgh to confirm the Consol Energy Center will host the next draft in June.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh running back Ray Graham will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right knee in the first quarter of Wednesday's 35-20 win over Connecticut. The school says Graham will need surgery to repair the knee.
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Commissioner Jim Delany insists expansion remains on the Big Ten's back burner. While the national landscape continues to change, Delany says his conference is happy with 12 members.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State is set to begin a new era on the basketball court with coach Patrick Chambers. Chambers replaces Ed DeChellis, who surprised his bosses in late May when he bolted his alma mater for the same job at Navy. It came two months after Penn State made its first NCAA tournament in a decade.
