WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Cooke scored his team-leading third goal
of the season and the Pittsburgh Penguins raced past the Florida
Panthers 4-2 last night. Pascal Dupuis, James Neal and Richard Park
also had goals for the Penguins, who are off to their best start in
17 seasons despite playing without captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni
Malkin.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy
Rollins is headed toward free agency and says he wants to return to
the Phils. He made it clear yesterday he wants a five-year deal.
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. also says he wants Rollins to stay
in Philadelphia. But those mutual feelings are no guarantee Rollins
will be here next year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Charlie Morton will
be out about six months after having hip surgery. Morton had the
surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum, and is not expected to be
ready for the start of spring training.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers defensive backs William
Gay and Keenan Lewis were supposed to simply be fill-ins when
starting cornerback Bryant McFadden started the season on the
sideline with a leg injury. The duo has played so well, coach Mike
Tomlin says there's no need to rush McFadden back onto the field.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - A near-miss on the Penn State sideline
left Joe Paterno sore, though this latest ailment hasn't left the
Hall of Fame coach pondering his future. Paterno said yesterday his
focus is solely on the Nittany Lions' next game, at home Saturday
against Purdue. Then he added with a straight face that maybe he'd
coach another 10 years.

BOSTON (AP) - Boston College Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo
has sent a letter of apology to the presidents and ADs of the
Atlantic Coast Conference for saying in a newspaper interview that
ESPN told the league to add Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Boston College
released DeFilippo's short letter yesterday. In it, he apologizes
for "any negative effects caused by my recent interview with a
Boston Globe reporter."
