PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger passed for 365 yards and two touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers finally found a way to beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 25-17 yesterday. Roethlisberger completed 36 of 50 passes and led the Steelers on a series of clock-chewing drives, effectively keeping Brady and the NFL's top-ranked offense off the field.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Andre Hainault and Calen Carr scored in the first half to lift the Houston Dynamo past the Philadelphia Union 2-1 in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals last night. Carr's goal in the 30th minute snapped a 1-all tie and ultimately gave the Dynamo the edge in this series heading into Thursday night's matchup in Houston. The two-game series is based on aggregate goals between the two teams.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A strong defense and running game, and a knack for pulling out games down the stretch has fueled Number 16 Penn State to an 8-1 start. The latest close call came Saturday when Silas Redd's 3-yard touchdown run with 1:08 left helped beat Illinois 10-7.

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) — Voters in New Jersey will soon decide if they want to legalize gambling on professional sports games. The referendum is the only one on the ballot this fall in the Garden State. It asks whether sports betting should be allowed at Atlantic City casinos, the state's four horse racing tracks, and a former track location in Cherry Hill, outside Philadelphia.
