PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby scored twice and added two assists in his season debut and the Pittsburgh Penguins crushed the New York Islanders 5-0 last night. Playing his first game in more than 10 months while recovering from concussion-like symptoms, Crosby appeared to be in midseason form.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Alexei Ponikarovsky had two goals and an assist and Chad LaRose had a goal and two assists and the Carolina Hurricanes earned a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers last night. James van Riemsdyk and Matt Read scored for Philadelphia, which has lost two in a row.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former FBI director Louis Freeh is promising a thorough, independent investigation into policies and activities at Penn State related to the child sex-abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. Freeh has vowed to investigate activities stretching back to the mid-1970s.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has scheduled the first congressional hearing in the wake of the Penn State child abuse scandal. Three senators have announced that a December 13th hearing will look at how well the nation is protecting children from abuse and neglect.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is doing his best to protect his fractured right thumb. Roethlisberger didn't take a snap from center during practice yesterday. Instead he worked out of the shotgun and pistol formations to avoid the risk of aggravating the injury.

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — Frantz Massenat scored 23 points and Samme Givens added 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Drexel past Winthrop 68-45 in the seventh-place game of the Paradise Jam. Massenat was 6 of 8 from behind the arc for Drexel.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh has gone from fielding questions about playing the spoiler to questions about playing for a Big East championship. The Panthers are one of five teams with two conference losses and a shot being the Big East's BCS representative.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with shortstop Clint Barmes. The two-year deal is worth about $10.5 million. It reunites Barmes with Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle. The two worked together in Colorado from 2003-09.
