STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach. The massive shakeup last night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season. But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky proved too much for the board to ignore.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Police in riot gear have confronted hundreds of Penn State students who took to the streets after the ouster of football coach Joe Paterno. Crowds toppled a television news van and at least one photographer has been pelted with a rock. The students flooded downtown State College last night after Paterno and university President Graham Spanier were fired amid a growing furor linked to their handling of sex abuse allegations against a former assistant football coach.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Education Department is investigating whether Penn State failed to report incidents of sexual abuse on campus, as required by federal law. Colleges and universities must report the number of crimes on campus and provide warnings if safety is threatened. The investigation was launched after the arrest of former football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky on sexual abuse charges.
DALLAS (AP) — The National Football Foundation is withdrawing an award that was to be given to Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley. Curley has been charged with perjury and failure to report an alleged incident of child sex abuse by former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky to authorities, as required by state law. Curley took a leave of absence on Sunday night.
UNDATED (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark is upset about being fined $40,000 for an illegal hit against Baltimore's Ed Dickson. Clark was flagged 15 yards for unnecessary roughness on Sunday night late in the first half of Baltimore's 23-20 win for launching himself into Dickson just after the ball glanced off Dickson's hands.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Brett Connolly scored 2:30 into overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 last night. Connolly won it after Dominic Moore skated into the Flyers' zone and got the puck past a Philadelphia defender into the low slot, from where Connolly beat goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Brown ran for 123 yards and a touchdown and Temple beat Miami (Ohio) 24-21 last night to snap a two-game losing streak. Brown was filling in for Bernard Pierce, the star running back who sustained a head injury against Ohio in the Owls' last game.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Jordin Mayes scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half, Jesse Perry had his second straight double-double and Number 16 Arizona pulled away from Duquesne for a 67-59 victory last night. Arizona struggled against the Dukes' pressure well into the second half before pulling away on a run triggered by Mayes and its defense.
NEW YORK (AP) — God'sgift Achiuwa had 21 points and eight rebounds and St. John's rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit for a 78-73 victory over Lehigh last night to give coach Steve Lavin a win in his return to the bench a month after prostate cancer surgery. The Red Storm were down 60-46 with 11:09 to play, then turned on the defensive intensity in holding the Mountain Hawks scoreless for almost 6 minutes to get back in the game.
