WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Ilya Bryzgalov made 29 saves and the Philadelphia Flyers scored three times in the first period to chase All-Star goalie Ryan Miller in a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres last night. It was the first meeting between the teams since the Flyers eliminated the Sabres in seven games during their Eastern Conference quarterfinal last season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid has survived the heat in Philadelphia. The birds struggled early in the season. In a Super Bowl-or-bust year, Reid took the blame for the dismal 1-4 start. Finally, his players have responded.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The linebacker situation for the Pittsburgh Steelers is still cloudy. James Harrison wants to be on the field Sunday night when the Steelers host rival Baltimore, but the All-Pro isn't willing to risk his vision to do it. Harrison practiced yesterday for the first time since fracturing the orbital bone around his right eye a month ago. Fellow linebackers James Farrior and LaMarr Woodley are also questionable against the Ravens.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — There once was a time when the Ravens-Steelers rivalry was fueled by hate. The operative word now is respect. As the Ravens prepare for Sunday night's showdown in Pittsburgh, they have nothing cruel to say about the Steelers. Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs says they don't like them, but they definitely respect them.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The Penn State quarterback job is still officially a two-man rotation according to coach Joe Paterno. But on the field, it looks like Matt McGloin is the go-to guy in the huddle over Rob Bolden for the 16th-ranked Nittany Lions. Penn State enters the bye week with a surprising two-game lead in the loss column over Leaders Division rivals Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin.

LEWISBURG, Pa. (AP) — There's a buzz about Bucknell basketball again in the Patriot League. The Bison are the preseason favorite to repeat as conference champion and return to the NCAA tournament. They're coming off a 25-win season, the second-most in school history behind a 27-win campaign in 2005-6.
