BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have interviewed Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin to replace Terry Francona as manager. Francona parted ways with the team after its unprecedented September collapse. The Red Sox are also scheduled to talk to Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum this week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The surging Pittsburgh Steelers are ready for payback this weekend against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens embarrassed the Steelers 35-7 in the season-opener. Pittsburgh turned it over seven times and let the Ravens push them around.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens are enduring an up-and-down season. They've routed the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets and Houston Texans. They've also lost to Tennessee and Jacksonville, who own a combined 6-9 record. The Raven will strive for consistency when the face the Steelers again on Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles seem to have put their poor start behind them. They didn't commit a turnover for the first time this season Sunday night. The result was a convincing 34-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys that suddenly thrust Philadelphia back into the mix in a jumbled NFC East.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have declined options on pitcher Paul Maholm, catchers Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder and shortstop Ronny Cedeno. The move allows each player to become a free agent.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State University's Bernard James and Xavier Gibson helped lead Florida State University to victory against Indiana University of Pennsylvania in an exhibition opener for both teams. The final score was 80-51 at last night's game in Tallahassee. IUP's Ashton Smith led all scorers with 18 points and Julian Sanders added 17 points for the team.
