PITTSBURGH (AP) — James Neal beat Carolina's Cam Ward on the stick side in the shootout to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 2-1 victory over the Hurricanes last night. Evgeni Malkin scored his 22nd goal of the season for the Penguins and scored leading off the shootout as Pittsburgh won its third straight.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Left-hander Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed on a $15 million, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. The 2008 World Series MVP went 14-9 with a 2.79 ERA in 32 games last year. Hamels was selected to his second career All-Star Game and finished fifth in National League Cy Young Award voting.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Right-hander Jeff Karstens and the Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a $3.1 million, one-year contract. That's nearly triple his $1.15 million earnings last year. The 29-year-old went 9-9 with a 3.38 ERA in 2011, posting career highs in wins, strikeouts, and innings. His deal avoided salary arbitration.
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders have been given permission to interview Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg for their vacant coaching job. Mornhinweg has spent the past nine seasons as an offensive assistant with the Eagles.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Steelers assistant coach Kirby Wilson remains in critical condition with burns to more than 45 percent of his body. The team released a statement from Wilson's family yesterday saying the 50-year-old also suffered smoke inhalation during the January 6th fire at his townhouse in a northern Pittsburgh suburb.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Devereaux Peters scored 20 points in 18 minutes to lead Number 2 Notre Dame to a 120-44 victory against Pittsburgh, the most lopsided Big East victory ever for the Fighting Irish. It was the second-highest scoring game for the Irish this season.
