WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Friday
TORONTO (AP) - Brian Boucher made 27 saves and Claude Giroux's
second-period goal stood up as the winner in the Flyers' 3-2
victory over the Maple Leafs last night. Andrej Meszaros and
Darroll Powe also scored for Eastern Conference-leading
Philadelphia.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - The Phillies and manager Charlie Manuel
have agreed to a two-year contract extension through 2013. Manuel
has led the Phillies to four straight division titles, two NL
pennants and a World Series title in 2008. He took over in 2005 and
has never had a losing season, winning 88 or more games in five of
six years.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Roy Halladay and CC Sabathia both
pitched like aces yesterday and the Phillies beat the New York
Yankees 7-0. Halladay threw six shutout innings, holding the
Yankees to four hits. The NL Cy Young winner walked none and struck
out two.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - Ryan Adams hit a two-run home run and the
Baltimore Orioles rallied to beat the Pirates 11-8 on last night.
Joel Hanrahan, who was named Pittsburgh's closer at the start of
spring training, allowed four runs in the fifth inning. Pirates
starter Paul Maholm allowed one run on four hits and struck out
one. It was the left-hander's sharpest and longest outing so far
this spring.
NEW YORK (AP) - Kemba Walker hit the winning basket on a classic
stepback jumper at the buzzer, and Number 21 Connecticut stunned
third-ranked Pittsburgh 76-74 in the quarterfinals of the Big East
tournament yesterday. UConn faces Syracuse in the semifinals
tonight.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jeff Brooks finished with 15 points and
seven rebounds, Talor Battle scored 13 and sixth-seeded Penn State
held off Indiana 61-55 in the first round of the Big Ten tournament
last night. The win may help Penn State make its case with the
NCAA's selection committee. Four teams, including Penn State,
entered the tournament with 9-9 conference records.
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple Owls are three wins away from their
fourth straight Atlantic 10 championship. The Number 24 Owls open
today against La Salle, a city rival they beat twice this season.
The Owls are the second seed, behind Xavier, and hope this is the
year a conference tournament run bleeds into the NCAA tournament.
PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Soul have returned to the Arena
Football League after a two-year break. Their encore is minus their
famous front man. Rocker Jon Bon Jovi decided not to return for the
franchise's rebirth after spending five years as their majority
owner. Former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworksi is now one of the
majority owners of the Soul. The Soul open the season tonight at
the Pittsburgh Power.
