PITTSBURGH (AP) - Starlin Castro homered and Matt Garza pitched
seven shutout innings to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 1-0 win over
the sliding Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Castro's solo homer
leading off the eighth inning made a winner of Garza.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates activated catcher Ryan
Doumit from the 60-day disabled list prior to last night's game
against the Chicago Cubs. Doumit had been on the disabled list with
a severely sprained left ankle. He hurt it back in May in a home
plate collision during a game at Chicago.
DENVER (AP) - Roy Halladay got his NL-leading 14th victory as
the Philadelphia Phillies completed a sweep of Colorado with an 8-6
win over the Rockies yesterday. Ryan Howard drove in four runs with
a homer and a double.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - The Eagles have agreed to one-year
contracts with defensive tackles Anthony Hargrove and Derek Landri.
Earlier yesterday, the Eagles lost two defensive tackles for an
indeterminate amount of time. Trevor Laws injured his hip and was
carted off the field and Mike Patterson had a seizure and was
hospitalized.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder says
defensive tackle Mike Patterson is alert at a hospital after
suffering a seizure yesterday at training camp. Patterson dropped
to the ground between plays during practice at Lehigh University,
and the player began violently shaking. Burkholder says Patterson
is undergoing more tests at the hospital.
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Veteran linebacker James Farrior is still a
leader for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's going on his 10th season
as a mainstay on what's been the league's consistently best defense
in that span. The 36-year-old signed as a free agent from the New
York Jets in 2002.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Another Pittsburgh Steeler has some strong
words for Roger Goodell. Less than three weeks after linebacker
James Harrison made some inflammatory comments about the NFL
commissioner to Men's Journal magazine, safety Ryan Clark
criticized the power Goodell holds, particularly when it comes to
disciplining players.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Cowboys coach Jason Garrett likes the
confidence of Dallas' new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
Yesterday, Garrett was asked about comments Ryan made that seemed
directed at NFC East rival Philadelphia. Ryan said he didn't know
if Dallas would win the "all-hype team" like some other team.
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) - Midfielder Pavel Pardo scored to lift
the Chicago Fire to a 1-1 tie with the Philadelphia Union last
night in his debut with the team. The score erased Philadelphia's
lead, which had been achieved on Veljko Paunovic's 30-yard shot in
the 34th minute.
NEW YORK (AP) - Three members of the Williamsport Crosscutters
suffered minor injuries when their bus was involved in an accident
Tuesday night on Staten Island. The Crosscutters are a Short-Season
Class A team affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies. A team
spokesman in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, says two pitchers and a
staff member were treated at a hospital and released.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - A University of North Carolina
study shows that throwing too many pitches at a young age is the
primary cause of arm injuries among youth baseball players. The
study was done in collaboration with Little League Baseball and
Softball and USA Baseball.
