DENVER (AP) - Kyle Kendrick tossed eight sparkling innings, Ryan
Howard homered twice and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the
Colorado Rockies 5-0 last night. Hunter Pence doubled twice and
Shane Victorino and Raul Ibanez each singled and scored a run for
the Phils.
DENVER (AP) - Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Aaron Cook left
last night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies after four
innings because of muscle spasms in his neck. Cook left after
allowing four runs on five hits, striking out two and walking one.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Alfonso Soriano hit two of the Cubs'
season-high six home runs and the Cubs had a season-best 23 hits in
an 11-6 victory over the fading Pittsburgh Pirates last night. The
home run barrage sent the Pirates to their fifth straight loss.
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Pittsburgh wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders is
out for at least two weeks with a left-foot injury. The second-year
wideout underwent surgery Monday. He wore a walking boot and walked
on crutches during practice yesterday.
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Re-signed Pittsburgh Steelers vets are ready
to get going. Offensive lineman Doug Legursky is among several free
agents who've agreed to terms with the team but have spent the
first week of camp watching from the sidelines or working out on
their own. The official NFL "league year" doesn't start until
tomorrow, preventing free agents from participating in practice.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy
Maclin has reported to training camp at Lehigh University. He
missed the first five days of practice with an undisclosed illness.
The Eagles didn't practice yesterday. The team didn't announce if
Maclin would practice today.
ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) - Indianapolis has signed free agent
linebacker Ernie Sims, the second former first-round draft pick to
join the Colts in less than 24 hours. Sims' agent says the deal is
for one year. Last year, Sims had 55 tackles and two sacks with
Philadelphia.
NEW YORK (AP) - The NBA has filed an unfair labor practice
charge and a federal lawsuit against the NBA Players Association.
They accuse the players of failing to bargain "in good faith" and
of "impermissible pressure tactics" in labor talks.
NEW YORK (AP) - David Stern says NBA players are only
threatening themselves by going overseas. The NBA Commissioner
dismissed the notion that it's a bargaining tactic, warning it
could divide the union and possibly jeopardize players' contracts
if they get injured.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - A youth baseball team from Saudi
Arabia received a berth to the Little League World Series after a
squad from Uganda was denied visas because of discrepancies over
players' ages and birth dates. The Little League World Series
starts August 18th in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
UNDATED (AP) - A woman says she's set the unofficial record for
the fastest hike of the entire 2,180-mile Appalachian Trail.
Jennifer Pharr (fahr) Davis arrived at Springer Mountain in Georgia
Sunday after slightly more than 46 days on the trial. She embarked
from Mount Katahdin in Maine June 16th and averaged 47 miles per
day.
