WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) - A person familiar with the negotiations
tells The Associated Press players didn't vote yesterday on a
tentative agreement to end the NFL lockout because they hadn't seen
the full proposal approved by owners. Owners overwhelmingly voted
for a tentative agreement earlier yesterday, pending an OK from the
players, who later held a conference call to discuss the proposal.
That call ended without a vote.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Red-hot Jimmy Rollins is leading the
Philadelphia Phillies offense. Manager Charlie Manuel says Rollins
is staying on the ball, and is a bit more patient. Since July 2nd
Rollins is batting .406 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 14 games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed free-agent
veteran reliever Jason Grilli to bolster their bullpen. The
34-year-old right-hander is 18-18 with two saves and a 4.74 ERA in
238 career games with five major league teams. Grilli went 4-1 with
three saves while pitching for Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the
Philadelphia Phillies' organization earlier this year.

Pittsburgh (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens is on
a roll. The 28-year-old right-hander is 8-5 with a 2.28 ERA, second
best in the National League. Karstens began the year in the bullpen
before being thrust into a starter's role due to injury. He's
become one of the most efficient pitchers in the league.

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (AP) - Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn was
forced to the 18th hole yesterday before beating Canada's Jisoo
Keel to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Girls Junior
Championship. Karen Chung of Livingston, New Jersey also advanced.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Plaxico Burress has a simple
message for kids: Make good decisions. The wide receiver spoke with
children from the Urban League of Broward County, Florida
yesterday, telling them about the nightclub shooting that sent him
to prison. Burress is hoping to restart his NFL career this
upcoming season.
