READING, Pa. (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies closer Brad Lidge
pitched a perfect inning at Double-A yesterday. The 34-year-old
right-hander is coming back from shoulder and elbow problems. Lidge
struck out two in the sixth inning yesterday in an Eastern League
game for Reading against Trenton. He hasn't pitched in the majors
this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ilya Bryzgalov wants to accomplish what no
goalie other than Bernie Parent has done for the Philadelphia
Flyers: Win a Stanley Cup. The 31-year-old Russian understands the
pressure of being a goaltender in Philadelphia. Bryzgalov says, "I
want to be the guy who can carry this team." He made the
statements yesterday during a conference call.

NEW YORK (AP) - Lawyers for the two sides in the NFL's labor
dispute met separately yesterday before getting together later in
the day. Owners and players are set to talk again starting today,
after two days of long negotiations last week.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles defensive end
Brandon Graham says the NFL lockout has helped his golf game. It's
also helped his surgically repaired right knee. Graham and
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Manny Harris were among the locked-out
athletes at Barton Hills Country Club yesterday to support the
Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. The open-enrollment, tuition-free
school is scheduled to open in September in Detroit.

ATLANTA (AP) - Police say Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver
Hines Ward failed field sobriety tests during a traffic stop in
Atlanta that landed him a drunken driving charge. The police report
says a transit officer pulled Ward over early Saturday morning
after he failed to maintain his lane and hit a curb.

ORONO, Maine (AP) - A University of Maine football player has
died in a motorcycle accident in Pennsylvania. Charles Kyeremeh was
a sophomore at the school. UMaine says the accident happened Sunday
afternoon near Donaldson, Pennsylvania. Kyererneh was an honor-roll
student and star running back at Cedar Crest High School in
Lebanon, Pennsylvania, before coming to UMaine.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The Penn State quarterback race is off
to a rousing start with a month still to go before training camp.
Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden have both said they feel like they
should be the starter. But coach Joe Paterno put off the decision
after spring practice other than saying the field had been narrowed
to McGloin and Bolden.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - A team from Hamamatsu City, Japan
has secured the first entry in this year's Little League World
Series. The Hamamatsu Minami league team defeated a squad from
Yokohama, 14-3 over the weekend to earn a trip to South

August 18th.
