PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Boston Red Sox-Philadelphia Phillies
series could be a preview of what's to come. Long before spring
training even started, the Sox and the Phils were favorites to play
each other in October. Here comes an early taste. The teams will
open a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park tonight with Cliff Lee
facing Josh Beckett.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates announced yesterday that
outfielder Jose Tabata has been diagnosed with a left quad strain,
but his status is uncertain. The 22-year-old suffered the injury in
the first inning of Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox in
Pittsburgh, and was carted off the field. He could be placed on the
15-day disabled list later this week.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers signed right wing Andreas Nodl
and left wing Tom Sestito to contract extensions yesterday. The
club also acquired a draft choice from Minnesota in exchange for
center Darroll Powe.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jeff Carter is moving forward. There may
have been feelings of shock, anger and resentment when he found out
he'd been traded from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Columbus Blue
Jackets last week. But Carter says, "I'm in Columbus now. I'm not
worried about what's going on (in Philadelphia) anymore."
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma says star
center Evgeni Malkin "probably is already ready to go" for the
start of next season following recovery from torn ligaments in his
right knee. Bylsma says Malkin is making significant progress in
his rehabilitation.
HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) - Kansas club pro Sean Dougherty shot an
8-under 64 yesterday to set a 36-hole scoring record and build a
two-shot lead in his debut in the PGA Professional National
Championship. Dougherty was at 12-under 131. That broke the 36-hole
record previously held by Sam Snead in 1971.
