WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Tuesday

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Paul Maholm pitched seven shutout innings,
Brandon Wood homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York
Mets 3-1 last night to split their four-game series. Maholm lowered
his ERA to 3.12, allowing only three hits and two walks. Hampered
by poor run support, he won for just the second time since April
25th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Boston Red Sox have traded minor league
catcher Mike McKenry to the Pittsburgh Pirates for either a player
to be named or cash. The 26-year-old McKenry was hitting .274 with
three home runs and 12 RBIs at Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox got
him from the Colorado organization on March 29th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Johan Santana has not thrown off a mound since
experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired left shoulder 10
days ago when the New York Mets ace ramped up the intensity of his
workouts. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said yesterday before
the Mets played the Pittsburgh Pirates that Santana hopes to get
back on a mound later this week.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Quarterback Rob Bolden has returned to
Happy Valley, putting to rest speculation about whether the Penn
State sophomore might transfer. He's not the only Nittany Lion
eager to bounce back this fall. There are carries available at
tailback with career-leading rusher Evan Royster now hoping to hook
on in the NFL. Enter senior Stephfon Green, who is more than eager
to prove himself.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kyle Busch has been docked six points and
his crew chief fined $25,000 because his car failed post-race
inspection at Pocono Raceway. The Number 18 Toyota was found to be
too low during NASCAR's inspection Sunday. NASCAR responded
yesterday by docking Busch six driver points and car owner Joe
Gibbs six owner points. Crew chief Dave Rogers received the fine.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Former New York Mets and Philadelphia
Phillies outfielder Lenny Dykstra has pleaded not guilty in a
federal case. Dykstra is accused of embezzling money from a
bankruptcy estate. He appeared yesterday in a Los Angeles courtroom
to enter his plea. The former star was charged last month with more
than a dozen counts, including bankruptcy fraud.
