WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Lance Berkman lined a bases-loaded single over
a drawn-in outfield with one out in the ninth inning. This gave the
St. Louis Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the run-starved Philadelphia
Phillies last night. The Phillies' Roy Oswalt worked five efficient
innings in his first start off the DL for lower back inflammation.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies rookie reliever Michael
Stutes was removed after throwing only three pitches in the sixth
inning against the St. Louis Cardinals. Stutes fell behind 3-0 to
Lance Berkman leading off the sixth before looking to the dugout
for help and pointing at his right shoulder.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Washington Nationals' game against the
Pittsburgh Pirates was postponed yesterday because of rain. The
Nationals announced the postponement more than three hours before
the scheduled first pitch. A makeup date will be announced in the
coming days.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The NHL has suspended Flyers' forward Dan
Carcillo. NHL senior vice president Mike Murphy announced the
ruling yesterday. Carcillo has been suspended without pay for the
first two games of next season for confronting officials during
this year's playoffs.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bernard Hopkins has another chance at boxing
history. If the 46-year-old Hopkins defeats WBC light heavyweight
champion Jean Pascal on Saturday in Montreal, he'll dethrone George
Foreman as the oldest boxer to win a world title. Foreman was 45
years, 10 months when he knocked out heavyweight champion Michael
Moorer.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State will play Boston College on
the road in this fall's Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The conferences
announced matchups for this year's challenge yesterday. Penn
State's visit November 30th to BC will be the first meeting between
the schools since 2001.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia University's Dalton
Pepper plans to leave the WVU basketball team. Coach Bob Huggins
