WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Tuesday

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have topped .500 with a
4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. Neil Walker hit a
tiebreaking double in the eighth inning. Garrett Jones led off the
eighth with a walk before Walker hit a shot into the right-field
corner.

MIAMI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies turned four double plays
to beat the Florida Marlins 6-4 last night. Joe Blanton came off
the disabled list to pitch five innings and earn his first victory
of the season. Blanton allowed eight hits, but left with a 6-3
lead.

MIAMI (AP) - Philadelphia's Roy Halladay will pitch in Miami
tonight for the first time since the Phillies ace pitched his
perfect game against the Florida Marlins on May 29th. Once again,
Miami's Josh Johnson will be the opposing pitcher. Phillies manager
Charlie Manuel says the latest duel ensures extra adrenaline in
both dugouts.

NEW YORK (AP) - Celtics forward Kevin Garnett and Celtics guard
Rajon Rondo have been selected to the NBA all-defensive first team.
This marks the record-tying ninth time Garnett has been selected.
Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was also selected for the ninth time.
They're joined by Magic center Dwight Howard and Heat forward
LeBron James.

NEW YORK (AP) - Major League Soccer's average salary rose 12
percent this year after Thierry Henry and Rafael Marquez joined
David Beckham in making the move from European clubs. The
Philadelphia Union ranks 6th in the league, with an average salary
of just under $132,000. Beckham remains the league's highest-paid
player at $6.5 million.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Junior college guard Matt Glover has
signed a letter of intent to play at Penn State. Glover will have
three years of eligibility left and can start playing this fall.
The Nittany Lions hope he will help fill a backcourt void created
by the departures of senior Talor Battle and Battle's half-brother,
freshman Taran Buie.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The family of Philadelphia billiards great
Willie Mosconi (mahs-KOHN'-ee) is selling his beloved pool cue, a
pool table and other memorabilia at a weekend auction. A
Pennsylvania auction house handling the sale believes Mosconi's
famed "Balabushka" cue could bring $100,000.
