ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jake Westbrook allowed a run in seven innings
and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a three-game losing streak in
manager Tony La Russa's first game back from illness, capitalizing
on Cliff Lee's career-high six walks to beat the Philadelphia
Phillies 3-1 last night. Lee is winless in six starts since
throwing a three-hit shutout at Washington on April 14th.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have activated
pitcher Roy Oswalt from the 15-day disabled list. The right-hander
is scheduled to start tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Oswalt had been on the DL with lower back inflammation. Meantime,
right-hander Vance Worley was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Danny Espinosa broke out of a dreadful slump
with a two-run homer in the seventh inning last night to lead the
Washington Nationals to a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Espinosa drove the first pitch thrown by Pirates reliever Jose
Ascanio into the left-field bullpen, scoring Mike Morse, who had
singled off Pittsburgh starter Paul Maholm.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The NFL has won another round in the court
fight with its players. Yesterday, an appellate court decided the
lockout should stay in play until a full appeal is heard on whether
it's legal. A June 3rd hearing is scheduled to hear arguments on
the legality of the lockout.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick
will speak to high school graduates in the City of Brotherly Love.
He'll speak to about 450 grads of the Camelot schools, which serve
at-risk youth. Camelot's CEO says Vick's life story will resonate
with students.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Former major league skipper and general
manager, Jack McKeon, will be inducted into the All American
Amateur Baseball Association Hall of Fame. McKeon won a World
Series as manager of the Florida Marlins in 2003. The
Tribune-Democrat reports he and his brother were part of an
all-star team that played in the 1948 AAABA tournament.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Penn State women's basketball coach Coquese
Washington is the winner of the women's coach of the year award
from the Black Coaches and Administrators. Washington is credited
with rebuilding the Nittany Lions program. Shaka Smart won the male
coach of the year award after leading Virginia Commonwealth
University to the Final Four.
