WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

MIAMI (AP) - It was a matchup of aces. In the end, Roy
Halliday's walk to John Johnson proved pivotal. Johnson scored the
Florida Marlins' first run, and they squeezed out another in the
eighth inning to beat Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1
last night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers broke out of a lengthy
hitting slump to roll past the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-3 last night.
Andrew McCutchen hit two home runs for the Pirates, who were hoping
to give themselves some breathing room after making a rare move
above .500 on Monday. Instead, they dropped to 18-18.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers captain Mike Richards headlines a
list of five players that need offseason surgery. Philadelphia
general manager Paul Holmgren made the announcement yesterday.
Richards needs wrist surgery. Goalie Michael Leighton, center Blair
Betts, defenseman Andrej Meszaros and winger Kris Versteeg also
need surgery.

UNDATED (AP) - While NFL owners aren't a popular lot these days
with the lockout, some command more respect than others. ESPN.com
has taken its power rankings to the league's ownership and ranked
the Pittsburgh Steelers' Rooney family as the most respected in the
league. Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie comes in 5th.

PHOENIX (AP) - Eight-time All-Pro guard Alan Faneca has
announced his retirement after 13 seasons in the NFL. The former
Pittsburgh Steelers standout played last season with the Arizona
Cardinals. He announced he was leaving the game in a statement
released yesterday. The lineman played 10 seasons with Pittsburgh
before signing a contract with the Jets.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kenny Geidel (GUY'-dell), whose high-pitched
voice and tireless work ethic made him a fixture at Pittsburgh
sporting events for more than a quarter century, died Monday at the
age of 64. Geidel began hawking refreshments at Three Rivers
Stadium in 1985 and roamed the stands for all three of Pittsburgh's
pro sports franchises.

JIM THORPE, Pa. (AP) - The Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame
plans to unveil a second life-sized statue of the sports great. It
will be erected in the eastern Pennsylvania town that bears his
name. The latest bronzed statue will depict Thorpe throwing a
discus. The first statue was unveiled in 2007 and shows Thorpe
playing football.
