WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Monday

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies snapped a 4-game
skid yesterday and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3. Neil Walker hit
a two-run homer in the first inning, one of six Pittsburgh hits off
Roy Halladay, who had six strikeouts and one walk in tying for the
most wins in the majors.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have the Number 1 draft
pick tonight, and the organization has options. UCLA right-hander
Gerrit Cole could be the Pirates' guy. Or, maybe Rice third baseman
Anthony Rendon. The Pirates last drafted first in 2002, when they
took pitcher Bryan Bullington.

CHICAGO (AP) - Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany figures Ohio
State is in for some tough questions as it tries to dig out from
the scandal that cost football coach Jim Tressel his job. On a day
when the Big Ten announced Indianapolis will host the football
championship through 2015 and rotate the men's and women's
basketball tournaments with Chicago, the Tressel saga remained a
hot topic.

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Hall of Famer Betsy King has qualified for
the U.S. Women's Open. She finished second in a 36-hole sectional
qualifier at Alta Mesa Golf Club. King had rounds of 73 and 71 on
Thursday to finish a stroke behind amateur Kyung Kim.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Steve Wheatcroft ran away with the
Melwood Prince George's County Open, finishing a staggering 29
under yesterday for a Nationwide Tour-record 12-stroke victory. The
former Indiana University player eagled the final hole for a
7-under 64 on the University of Maryland Golf Course.

PARIS (AP) - Bjorn Fratangelo became the first American boy
since John McEnroe in 1977 to win the junior title at the French
Open by defeating Dominic Thiem of Austria 3-6, 6-3, 8-6 yesterday.
The unseeded Fratangelo broke serve at 6-all when Thiem's backhand
sailed wide. He clinched victory and fell flat on the red dirt when
the 14th-seeded Thiem hit a backhand return long on match point.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Alex Rasmussen of HTC-Highroad won a sprint
to the finish line to win the 156-mile Philadelphia International
Championship pro cycling race yesterday. Rasmussen finished with a
time of five hours, 59 minutes, four seconds, just ahead of Peter
Sagan of Liquigas-Cannondale and Robert Forster of Team
UnitedHealthcare.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dartmouth used speed and finesse to run over
Army 32-10 in the final of the USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby
Championship yesterday. Chris Downer scored a pair of tries as the
Big Green stayed on the attack from the outset and proved that
sevens is vastly different from the more traditional 15's that
schools play.

NEW YORK (AP) - Plaxico Burress is ready to walk out of prison
and face another grim reality, a lockout that could jeopardize the
resumption of his football career. The former New York Giants
receiver was locked up for 20 months for illegally carrying and
firing a gun at a Manhattan nightclub. He's set to leave the Oneida
Correctional Facility in upstate New York today.
