PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels struck out nine in eight strong
innings and Ryan Howard homered to lift the Philadelphia Phillies

allowed six hits and walked none while lowering his ERA to 2.58 and
continuing his mastery of the Dodgers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Andrew McCutchen led off the 12th with a home
run and the Pittsburgh Pirates reached .500 with a 3-2 win over the
Arizona Diamondbacks last night. McCutchen took a 3-2 pitch from

team-leading 10th home run.

NEW YORK (AP) - NFL owners and players met for a second straight
day in New York. Judge Arthur Boylan joined Commissioner Roger
Goodell and NFLPA chief DeMaurice Smith. The league and the players
association issued a joint statement yesterday saying the
"confidential discussions" are part of ongoing mediation and are
"expected to continue" in the near future.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick's advice for Plaxico Burress is
to put family ahead of football. The Philadelphia Eagles' Pro Bowl

return to the NFL. The former New York Giants receiver spent nearly
two years in prison for a gun charge and was released Monday.

DALLAS (AP) - David Stern says owners and players remain "very
far apart" on a new labor deal after two days of negotiations. The
NBA Commissioner used the term "far apart" five times in about 8 1/2
minutes yesterday to describe where owners and players stand with a
June 30th deadline before the expiration of the current collective
bargaining agreement.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former NHL star Bill Guerin has joined the
Pittsburgh Penguins as a player development coach. The 18-year

itself in Philadelphia from July 19th to August 1st.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - College coaching greats Mike
Krzyzewski and Joe Paterno will meet on the same stage at Penn
State to discuss coaching, ethics and other issues for a show to
air on ESPN. The network will tape the discussion between Duke's
basketball coach and Penn State's football coach before an
invitation-only audience June 20th.

released a product yesterday designed to help prevent concussions
and other head injuries.
