WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Friday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers have selected Nikola
Vucevic with the 16th pick in the NBA draft. The 7-foot, 260-pound
Vucevic, out of USC, gives the Sixers the frontcourt help they
needed. Vucevic (Voo-CHAY'-vitch) worked out for the Sixers in the
weeks leading up to the draft.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers have selected Temple
forward Lavoy Allen with the 50th pick in the NBA draft. Allen
played four seasons with the Owls and is the program's career
leading rebounder.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Chris Carpenter threw seven strong innings and
Jon Jay and Lance Berkman homered to lead the St. Louis Cardinals
to a 12-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies last night.
Philadelphia starter Roy Oswalt left after two innings due to
tightness in his lower back. He gave up four runs and five hits.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers are shaking things
up. Captain Mike Richards and top goal-scorer Jeff Carter were both
traded yesterday on the eve of the draft. The moves clean house and
clear needed salary cap space to sign goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.
The deals sent Richards to the Los Angeles Kings and Carter to the
Columbus Blue Jackets.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers will play host to
the New York Rangers in the Winter Classic, and will open their
season at Stanley Cup-champion Boston. Among the highlights of the
2011-2012 schedule, the Flyers and Rangers will play in the annual
outdoor game January 2nd at Citizens Bank Park, home of Major
League Baseball's Philadelphia Phillies.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins will open the 2011-2012 season
with a three-game road swing across western Canada, beginning
October 6th against the Vancouver Canucks, the Western Conference
champions. Pittsburgh will also play in Calgary and Edmonton,
before playing host to Florida in the home opener October 11th.

UNDATED (AP) - NFL owners and players met for the second
straight day in Hull, Massachusetts, near Boston, as they attempt
to close in on a collective bargaining agreement. The general
manager of the Nantasket Beach Resort tells The Associated Press
the meetings lasted until late yesterday afternoon. The NFL said in
a statement last night that talks will continue.

NEW YORK (AP) - With a number of NBA All-Stars standing behind
him, union president and Lakers guard Derek Fisher said yesterday
players won't accept a bad deal to avoid a work stoppage. Player
representatives from each team were in town for their summer
meetings and were updated on the state of negotiations with owners.
The collective bargaining agreement expires June 30th.
