WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Carlos Ruiz's RBI single to center with two
outs in the 10th inning gave the Philadelphia Phillies a 5-4
comeback victory over the Florida Marlins last night and a sweep of
their doubleheader. The Phillies' win streak is now at six games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies topped the Florida
Marlins 8-1 yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader. Jimmy
Rollins hit a three-run homer and Wilson Valdez had a three-RBI
triple. Rollins and Valdez had their big hits in a six-run third
inning against Marlins starter Elih Villanueva.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cole
Hamels says his back is fine. The pitcher was taken out of
Tuesday's game against the Florida Marlins because of tightness in
the middle of his back. Hamels is scheduled to take the mound for
the Phils Sunday against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

HOUSTON (AP) - Pinch-hitter Xavier Paul doubled, then stayed in
the game and hit a two-run homer and single last night as the
Pittsburgh Pirates moved over .500 with a 7-3 win over the Houston
Astros. At 34-33, this is the first time the Pirates have been over
the break-even point so late in a season since August 15th, 1999.

NEW YORK (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and several
owners met with NFL Players Association chief DeMaurice Smith and a
group of players for a second straight day in Maryland to try and
work out a new labor deal. The two sides released a joint statement
yesterday, saying U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan oversaw the
discussions.

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Indoor pro football is returning to Tupelo,
Mississippi. The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports an
expansion team of the Ultimate Indoor Football League will begin
play in March of 2012. The UIFL began its inaugural season in
February with six teams, five of which remain in the league
including the Johnstown Generals in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
