PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cliff Lee tossed a two-hitter for his third
consecutive shutout and the Philadelphia Phillies beat Josh Beckett
and the Boston Red Sox 5-0 last night. In a series hailed as a
potential World Series preview, Lee and the Phillies dominated the
opener.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have placed closer
Ryan Madson on the 15-day disabled list with a right hand
contusion. Right-hander Andrew Carpenter was called up from
Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Madson's spot. The move was made
yesterday before the major league-leading Phillies opened a
three-game series against Boston.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Boston Red Sox have activated relievers
Bobby Jenks and Franklin Morales from the 15-day disabled list.
Right-hander Scott Atchison and lefty Tommy Hottovy were optioned
to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room on the roster. The moves were
announced before last night's game against the Phillies.
TORONTO (AP) - Alex Presley hit his first career home run,
Andrew McCutchen added a shot, and the Pittsburgh Pirates held on
to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 last night, earning their first
interleague road win in more than two years. Kevin Correia allowed
four runs and five hits in six innings for the Pirates, who have
won five of six.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have placed outfielder Jose Tabata
on the 15-day disabled list with a left quad strain, retroactive to
June 27th. Infielder Josh Harrison has been recalled from Triple-A
Indianapolis to take Tabata's roster spot.
HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) - Scott Erdmann birdied three of the final
four holes yesterday on Hershey Country Club's East Course for a
2-under 69 and a one-stroke lead over Sean Dougherty in the 44th
PGA Professional National Championship. Erdmann had a 12-under 202
total.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - They were part of the two biggest deals in
recent Philadelphia Flyers history. And now, Brayden Schenn, Wayne
Simmonds and Jakub Voracek say they're ready to fill the void left
by Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. The three were introduced
yesterday at the Wells Fargo Center, five days after being acquired
by the Flyers in two separate blockbuster trades.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins re-signed forward Pascal Dupuis
to a two-year contract yesterday, with an average annual value of
$1.5 million. The 32-year-old had 17 goals and 37 points to go
along with a plus-16 rating last season.
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - Tiger Woods says he's not coming back
until he's fully healthy. Woods says he's making progress in his
recovery from injuries to his left leg, although he has no idea
when he will return to golf. He says he's played with injuries too
often in his career, and now is the time to be smarter about his
health.
UNDATED (AP) - Two of Terrell Owens' former teammates say the
star wide receiver plans to return to the NFL despite recent
surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
Both players spoke to The Associated Press on condition of
anonymity yesterday because Owens hasn't publicly revealed he had
the surgery.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA
executive director DeMaurice Smith flew to Florida together to
speak to rookies after opening four days of labor talks in
Minnesota. Spokesmen for the league and the players' association
confirmed last night that the two power brokers were on the same
plane from Minnesota to address the NFLPA's rookie symposium.
DALLAS (AP) - Representatives for NBA players and owners will
meet tomorrow, hours before the collective bargaining agreement
expires. Commissioner David Stern says that's still enough time for
a deal. Owners did not vote to authorize a lockout during their
meeting yesterday, but have given the labor relations committee the
go-ahead to do whatever is necessary.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Michael Haywood is asking the Pennsylvania
Human Relations Commission and other state and federal agencies to
investigate his termination by the University of Pittsburgh.
