WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

MIAMI (AP) - Mike Stanton's solo homer with one out in the 10th
helped the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6 last
night. The Marlins overcame an early four-run deficit to avoid a
series sweep. Philadelphia's John Mayberry Jr. hit two home runs
and Jimmy Rollins also homered for the Phils.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Houston Astros snapped a five-game losing
streak with an 8-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night.
Hunter Pence had three hits, including an RBI single during a
five-run sixth inning.

MIAMI (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco
is still out of the lineup because of a sore back but he expects to
start in the All-Star game next week. Polanco plans to see a
specialist when the team returns home for a weekend series against
Atlanta.

NEW YORK (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA chief
DeMaurice Smith are expected to return to negotiations today. A
person with knowledge of the situation tells the Associated Press
lawyers for the NFL and the players' association met for a second
straight day yesterday in Manhattan to sort out contract language
and details to speed up the process in reaching a new collective
bargaining agreement.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NBA players' association says the league has
made inaccurate financial projections before. This comes a day
after a report questioned whether the league indeed lost money two
seasons ago. Union spokesman Dan Wasserman says the NBA projected a
decline in revenues in 2009-10 but they actually rose, so the final
losses should have been much less than the league said.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - NBA and college basketball player Armen
Gilliam has died. He was 47. Gilliam was part of the UNLV Runnin'
Rebels basketball team that made a run to the Final Four in 1987.
He also played for several NBA teams.
